What Is Joseph Phelps Insignia?

If you are a fan of fine wines, then it is likely that you have heard the name “Joseph Phelps.” Joseph Phelps Vineyards was a successful Colorado builder who fell in love with the Napa and Sonoma Wine regions in the 70’s In 1973 he encountered a property in Napa Valley that later became his vineyard.

Over time, he launched his flagship wine, Insignia, in 1974. This wine is a beautiful red Bordeaux-style blend that is California's first of its kind. “At its very essence, Insignia is an emblem of Joe’s foundational philosophy that you have to give your best to craft the best.”

The currently available vintage (2019) is composed of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and 2% Malbec. All of these grapes are combined to unlock a “gorgeous perfume of black cherry compote, stewed plums, and blackcurrant pastilles with hints of bay leaves, red roses, underbrush, and pencil lead plus a hint of menthol.”

According to the winery, Insignia pairs well with:

  • Flank Steak
  • Pan Seared Ribeye
  • Grilled Portabella Mushrooms

If you are looking for the finest of wines, Joseph Phelps Insignia is the wine to enjoy while sitting on the back deck of the absolutely beautiful Cedar Crest Inn.
