Finding Antinori Tignanello Wine in Asheville, NC
Tignanello was the first Sangiovese aged in barriques, the first red wine blended with untraditional varieties, and one of the first wines in the Chianti Classico region that did not use white grapes. Produced at The Tenuta Tignanello estate, Tignanello is one of a kind and uniquely made from a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc.
When you're traveling to North Carolina, you can find this rare wine available at Metro Wines, just a short distance from Haywood Hotel in downtown Asheville.
The History of Tignanello
Tignanello is exclusively produced from the Tignanello estate’s vineyard, a parcel of 140 acres with limestone-rich soils and a southwestern exposure at 1150-1325 feet above sea level.
It was the first Sangiovese wine to be aged in small oak barrels, the first modern red wine to use non-traditional varieties like Cabernet in the blend, and one of the first Chianti Classico red wines to be produced without white grapes.
The wine, originally known as "Chianti Classico Riserva Vigneto Tignanello,” was first produced in 1970, when the blend contained white grapes, and the wine was aged in small oak barrels. In 1971, this Tuscan red blend was changed from a traditional Chianti Classico to a blend of both Italian and classic French Bordeaux grapes..
The traditional addition of a small amount of white grapes previously used in the blend were eliminated in the 1975 vintage. The current blend has been in use since 1982.
Climate in Chianti Classico
The 2018 Chianti Classico growing season began with typical winter weather, both in terms of temperature and rainfall. Despite these climatic conditions, the vines started breaking bud a week before the seasonal average for this area.
In August, the beginning of scattered rainfalls, followed by a dry, breezy wind in September and October, allowed the grapes to ripen to perfection, ensuring excellent sugar levels and polyphenolic maturity. Harvesting began at the end of September with Sangiovese and ended in mid-October with Cabernet.
Tasting Notes of the Tignanello 2018
Tignanello 2018 is a rich, intense ruby color when delicately poured into a wine glass. The wine produces notes of ripe red fruit, black cherries, sour cherries and exhibits sweet hints of vanilla, mint, and white pepper.
Its palate is rich, heavy, though well-balanced. Whereas the tannins sustain an exceptional freshness that gives the wine length, refinement, and persistence of flavors.
