Machete, Orin Swift

WHOA. Another Orin Swift whole package. As with all Orin "The Prisoner" Swift wines, the outside, that is, the name, the label, the bottle size  suggest the intensity of the inside. Is there anyone out there who does not think this bottle means business? Dave Phinney of Orin Swift Cellars, Napa, brings us this 2012 Proprietary Red  blend of Petite Sirah, Syrah and Grenache. Black with a translucent ruby in the glass, red berries including cherries and strawberries on the nose combined with blackberries and blueberries on the palate. A touch of violet brings in the dreamy but the spinkle of pepper and coffee keeps it real. Long, long enduring finish.  There are 12 different labels. We have 6.

2012 Machete

In the glass, deep, dark bluish-red hues can be seen with a band of ruby on the rim. Uplifted aromatics of ripe blackberries, mulled raspberries, acacia flowers, toasty oak, and herbal notes hit the nose in a pronounced way. Offering up robust flavors during the approach, the mid palate is exposed to an unadulterated array of crushed berries, dark chocolate, black fruits, and a tinge of creamy espresso. Finishing with principle, the glossy tannins are in alignment for immediate enjoyment or some time in the cellar too.

About Orin Swift:

The history of Orin Swift Cellars dates back to 1995 when on a lark, David Swift Phinney took a friend up on an offer and went to Florence, Italy to spend a semester “studying”. During that time, he was introduced to wine, how it was made, and got hooked. A few more years of university led to graduation and eventually a job at Robert Mondavi Winery in 1997 as a temporary harvest worker. Deciding that if he was going to work this hard, it would eventually have to be for himself, so in 1998 he founded Orin Swift Cellars; Orin is his father’s middle name and Swift is his mother’s maiden name.

With two tons of zinfandel and not much else, he spent the next decade making wine for others as well as himself and grew the company into a multinational brand that now includes 300 acres of vineyards in the Southwest of France. This international ambition has led to projects in Spain, Italy, Corsica, Argentina and other locations around the globe.

Despite the growth, Orin Swift Cellars continues to operate as a small, passionate team of friends and family dedicated to making great wine. We welcome you to stop by and visit us at our new tasting room located in downtown St. Helena
