News Release: Tuesday, March 30, 2021

About: Emmanuel Kemiji Wine Tasting on Zoom

There are about 275 Master Sommeliers in the world. Even more rare is a Master Sommelier who is the WineMaker for his two wineries!

Join us as The Asheville School of Wine @MetroWines presents this rare opportunity to taste wine with a Master Sommelier and Winemaker Emmanuel Kemiji on Thursday, April 29th, 2021, at 5:30 on Zoom through MetroWines.

Miura and Clos Pissarra wineries were founded by Emmanuel Kemiji, one of the few master sommeliers to also own a winery! To become a master sommelier, you must be able to discern the qualities in an exceptional wine. Emmanuel uses these skills to produce some of the best wines in the world.

The most important step to producing the best wine is to acquire the best grapes. Emmanuel has the uncanny ability to find the best vineyards in Spain and California for his wines.

"I am amazed at his ability to find the right slope on a mountain or persuade the owners of the best vineyards around to sell him their grapes." says John Kerr, co-owner of MetroWines.

The name Clos Pissarra is derived from the Catalan word for slate, which is the soil found in the regions of Montsant (sacred mountain) and Priorat (priory) that produce many of Spain’s most exceptional wines. These regions produce wines of great intensity and concentration, yet elegant and balanced.

Miura winery focuses on some of California’s most idyllic Pinot Noir regions. The Santa Lucia Highlands has quickly become recognized as one of the best regions for the varietal on the West coast.

The Zoom with Emmanuel Kemiji is "on the house" through MetroWines.

The Wines For the Tasting:

Arrels de Clos Pissarra, El Sol Blanc Montsant - white Grenache 2017

Regular price: $36.  Event price: $26.  Orders from event: $30

El Sol Blanc is named after the brutal sun that besieges this vineyard surrounding the Clos Pissarra winery. The clay and slate soil produce a white Grenache (Garnatxa Blanca in Catalan) with a flinty, mineral character wrapped in rich peach notes and a lively acidity as well as a hint of white flowers. This wine shows very good balance and concentration, and may be the reason that this white sells out at the winery before the highly regarded reds from Clos Pissarra.

Arrels de Clos Pissarra, Aristan Vineyard Grenache/Syrah 2016

Regular price: $25. Event price: $18. Orders from event: $21.

Aristan is a small vineyard that lies next to the winery. The yields of the Grenache and Syrah are cut back to a miserly one ton per acre to provide exceptional concentration to the wine. The Grenache brings wonderful aromatics and bright red fruit to the wine, while the Syrah adds a full, luscious character with some rustic earth tones to the mixture. The wine is polished, refined but with an earthy, terroir driven character. Expect plum, herbs, fresh tobacco and blueberry leading to some earth and smoke at the finish.

Miura Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir 2018

Regular price: $36.  Event price: $26.  Orders from event: $30

The 2018 Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir is produced from the harvest of Steve McIntyre’s vineyard, producing a quality that is off-the-charts. This Pinot is done in a richly textured style with good weight and balance. Expect abundant bright red fruits, and multi-dimensional flavors. Medium-bodied, bursting with bright red cherry and red plum fruit aromas that develop on the palate along with allspice notes. A refreshing acidity keeps the wine bright and focused.

Customers can buy one, two or three bottles.

  • All three bottles at special event price are $70
  • Pinot Noir and White Grenache are $52
  • Aristan Grenache/Syrah and one of the others are $44
