El Coto 2013, Viura

b2ap3_thumbnail_el-coto.jpg

This wine imported by Frederick Wildman & Sons drinks way above its value minded price. Way above. The wine is made of 100% Viura (Macabeo) grapes from Rioja Alavesa and vineyards near the Najerilla River. Good body with a palate of fruit including pear, flowers and herbs. Tart highnotes. The winemaker calls the wine clean and vivacious with a dry finish. Read about Macabeo from Wine Searcher HERE.

From The Blog: "From one of the regions larger bodegas, is an amazing value. It offers fresh melon, pear and honey qualities, with notes of anise and white pepper adding lift. A refreshingly bitter quality emerges with air and carries through the nicely persistent finish. Id match this one up with grilled or roasted chicken or even a richer seafood preparation, with lots of lemon and herbs."

" Light gold. Scents of melon, pear, honey and anise, plus a hint of white pepper. Nervy citrus and orchard fruit flavors show a refreshingly bitter quality, with a pleasant spicy bite to the lush back end. Has heft and punch, finishing with good clarity and spicy persistence."

"This is grassy and pungent up front, with citrus, nectarine and apple aromas. It feels crisp and tangy, with chalky grip and flavors of citrus and green apple. Snappy and long on the finish, this is a Sauvignon Blanc-styled Viura."

Grade: Best Buy!

  • Wine SpectatorAuthor:

"Smoke and blanched almond notes accent modest apple and pear fruit in this firm, crisp white. A bit austere, but balanced and refreshing."

Summary

Vinification: The El Coto de Rioja Blanco is a fresh, clean styled white crafted from 100% Viura grown in the Rioja Alavesa region. The must is cold macerated for 24 hours and fermented in stainless steel for 15 days, followed by 3-6 months in stainless steel prior to fining, a gentle filtration and bottling.

Always fresh and crisp on the palate with notes of citrus and pear. This is a great value white perfect for seafood and salads.
