Gruet Brut, New Mexico

The Gruet Winery in France dates back to 1952 where generation after generation made champagne. Some of the children, as children do!, departed France and chose New Mexico to replicate and carry forth the family art of wine making. This Gruet Brut is made in the traditional champagne method, patience rather than process, with the second fermentation taking place in the bottle. New mexico has high altitudes and wildly divergent temperatures in a 24 hour period. Grapes for Gruet Brut are grown at said high altitudes where they must, much like the skybound grapes in Argentina, struggle to keep their paycheck. The winemaker calls this brut "brilliant with ultra fine bubbles." Of course, he would! But in this case, the winemaker does not just give us puffery. This non-vintage sparkling wine presents a fine bouquet of green apples and grapefruit. But wait, not too much grapefruit! (The Metro Wines Tasting Panel has become quite sensitive to wines that rely too much on grapefruit on the palate or perhaps default into grapefruit for lack of other flavors that should be present in a quality wine and then say WOW, this wine has flavors of grapefruit as if it is unique or a requirement. Clearly we digress into a wine peeve here....) Gruet Brut is good to go. The Metro Wines Tasting Panel also likes the smooth blending of both a rich complexity with crispiness and snappiness on the palate as well as the easily discernable toasty finish.
