biltmore estateIn the twenty-first century, our region's natural beauty and cultural significance are well known. Western North Carolina welcomes tens of thousands of new families each year, as well as millions of tourists.

There is a lot to appreciate about Asheville, NC, which is now known for its fantastic art scene, world-class food, famous breweries, and hundreds of thousands of acres of practically pristine wilderness. It's hard to believe that a little over a century ago, few people were aware of the French Broad River Valley's beauty and magnificence.

The Vanderbilt family found our beautiful area and began visiting. Eventually, they constructed the largest private residence in the country to better enjoy summers in the mountains.

The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC

In the 1880s, George Vanderbilt II purchased 700 acres of farmland and countryside near the confluence of the French Broad and Swannanoa Rivers. The landowners were ready to sell because many of the properties were in bad shape.

The estate's construction began in 1889. The project's scope included the construction of a woodworking factory and a brick kiln capable of producing over 32,000 bricks per day.

The ornate style was influenced by Renaissance buildings in France. The interior and grounds were precisely planned down to the last detail. The scale of the project meant hundreds of people would need a place to live during construction. Biltmore Village, known then as Best, was built as a town for workers. It had a school, church, hospital, and train station.

Today, you can visit the estate and stay on the property or in one of many other beautiful lodging options nearby, including:
