Biltmore EstateThe natural wonder and cultural impact of our area is hardly a secret in the 21st century. In any given year, we welcome tens of thousands of new residents as well as millions of tourists.

Known now for an incredible art scene, world-class food, famous breweries, and hundreds of thousands of virtually untouched nature, there is a lot to love about Asheville, NC. It is hard to imagine that there was once a time when few people knew about the beauty and majesty of the French Broad River Valley.

The clean mountain air, pleasant weather, and stunning scenery are part of what drew George Vanderbilt to visit with his mother. Eventually, Vanderbilt decided to make it the location of his family's summer estate, a châteauesque-style mansion that became the largest privately-owned house in the United States.

One of the ways you can experience life like the Vanderbilts is by staying in the historic Inn on Biltmore Estate while you're visiting Asheville, NC. Harlan Estate Wine pairs perfectly with your stay at the Inn on Biltmore Estate.

You can find Harlan Estate Wine at our wine shop - Metro Wines, in downtown Asheville.

The Inn at Biltmore Estate

In the 1880s, George Vanderbilt II purchased 700 acres of countryside and farmland near the confluence of the French Broad and Swannanoa Rivers. Much of the land was in ill repair, and the landowners were eager to sell.

Construction on the estate began in 1889. The scope of the project required the building of a woodworking factory and brick kiln that produced over 32,000 bricks each day.

The ornate design was inspired by French Renaissance architecture. Each detail of the interior and grounds was meticulously planned.

Still owned by the Vanderbilt family, the house stands as a museum open to fascinating tours. As interesting as the house is, the grounds are just as much of a must-see. Sights and activities include:

  • Several world-class restaurants
  • Food and shopping in Antler Village
  • The beautiful Biltmore Gardens and arboretum
  • Several miles of hiking and mountain biking trails
  • Multi-purpose walking and biking trails
  • A fascinating playground
  • Horseback riding, a historic barn, and farm animals
  • Land Rover tours, sporting clays, and a spa
  • The Biltmore Winery
  • Much more

The best way to experience Biltmore is by staying at the beautiful Inn at Biltmore Estate. According to their website, "Gracious hospitality and the level of service for which the Vanderbilts were renowned—all this and more is yours with a stay at The Inn on Biltmore Estate®."
