Poetry @MetroWines

Wednesday, 22 March 2023 18:41
poetry

Sunday, April 30, 2023 - 3:00pm @MetroWines

Join us to celebrate National Poetry Month with a reading of Mildred Kiconco Barya’s The Animals of My Earth School at Metro Wines. Malaprop's is pleased to partner with Metro Wines to present this event and pairing of select wines and poems.

The reading is free and open to the public (You do not need to register). Wine and books will be on sale. Free, easy parking.

Mildred Kiconco Barya is a writer from Uganda and the author of four full-length poetry collections, most recently The Animals of My Earth School released by Terrapin Books, 2023. Her prose, hybrids, and poems have appeared in Shenandoah, Joyland, The Cincinnati Review, Tin House, Prairie Schooner, and elsewhere. She’s now working on a collection of creative nonfiction, and her essay, “Being Here in This Body”, won the 2020 Linda Flowers Literary Award and was published in the North Carolina Literary Review. Barya teaches creative writing and literature at UNC-Asheville, serves on the boards of African Writers Trust and Story Parlor, and coordinates the Poetrio Reading events at Malaprop’s Independent Bookstore/Café. She blogs here: www.mildredbarya.com

In the compassionate, playful, fable-like poems of The Animals of My Earth School, Mildred Kiconco Barya awakens us to the vividly singing, fully alive, non-human communities surrounding us. These poems demonstrate poetry’s unique ability to prick us from our self-involved numbness and awaken us to wonder. There is great solace, tenderness, and innocence here—the kind of innocence capable of apprehending the creatures of the world—and thus the world itself—afresh. Like a literary Noah’s ark of song, The Animals of My Earth School provides a place where all may dance and thrive. These poems provide pleasure and a glimmer of hope.  —Michael Hettich

Women's History Month Dinner

Saturday, 18 March 2023 08:52
womens history
RESERVE HERE!

Letter from the Chef with MENU !!

From Chef Terri Terrell:

Recently I took a road trip through the Mighty Mississippi Delta, my earth homeland. This road trip would prove to be two-fold. I wanted to go back and visit where my family was from since it had been 30 years but I also wanted to intentionally re-visit my food memories. I wanted to re-visit these memories because over the past 3 years I have nurtured a pop-up dining experience called The Clarksdale. This dining experience draws on my memories of the Mississippi Delta, gas station food and roadside diners. I wanted to see how these memories were holding up!

Fast forward… after a two week journey through the Delta I have returned to AVL inspired to create another Clarksdale Pop-Up dining experience and share more stories from The Delta!

As I visited each gas station and roadside restaurant throughout the Delta the common theme was that it was women; it was women in the kitchen, in the front and everywhere you looked. Now don’t get me wrong the men folx were present as well, but it was the women that were PRESENT…this is the memory that I remember most.

I want this dinner to be in honor of those women that cooked for me along my road trip down memory lane and what better way to do that than create a wine dinner during Women’s History Month!

I am really excited to announce that I will be joining Charles Hodge and the Sovereign Remedy Team along with Juniper Cooper from Johnson Brothers-Mutual wines and Metro WIne in creating a 5 Course wine dinner experience celebrating women wine makers and the female chefs of the Mississippi Delta.

The tickets will be $95.

Bordeaux Wine Tour with jean Christian Rotagni and Andy Hale

Thursday, 09 March 2023 12:31
bordeaux cathedral
Wine Tour of Bordeaux Hosted by Jean Christain Rotagni of Contrast Tours and Joined by Andy Hale of The Asheville School of Wine at Metro Wines.

"This is a very urban tour, as Bordeaux is a quintessential European city, and one of the trendiest destinations in the world. Not only is Bordeaux utterly pleasant to live in, with its rather mild weather, its 12th to 18th century glorious architecture, which earned it to be on UNESCO's World Heritage List, but this is also a city with a rich past, and a vibrant present. We will stay in the very center of the town, and will take daily trips from that location to vineyards, cultural sites of importance, and villages of legends. Everyday will be a new feast, with gastronomy and wine aligned with the exceptional character of what we will visit. Please take a look at the itinerary below and feel free to contact me with any questions."

Mardi Gras @MetroWines

Saturday, 21 January 2023 11:08
mardi gras metro

News Release: Saturday, January 21st, 2023
About: Celebrate Mardi Gras @MetroWines!
Drop in for a French Fête Extraordinaire, "Mardi Gras @MetroWines," with Chef Sam Etheridge of AMBROZIA on Tuesday February 21st from 4 to 6pm at Metrowines on Charlotte Street. Wines from Johnson Brothers/Mutual will be paired to each dish.
"We invite you to cruise the food and wine stations, mingle, clink glasses and laissez les bons temps rouler!" says, Gina Trippi, co-owner of MetroWines. "Although rooted in religion, Mardi Gras has come to mean a time for everyone to let the good times roll and let tomorrow worry about tomorrow!"
The evening is not a sit down dinner but a walk around Bourbon Street Bash featuring:

Station 1: Gumbo. White Wine

Station 2: Jambalaya. Light Red

Station 3: Pot Roast Po Boy. Big Red.

and Station 4: King Cake. Dessert wine.
King cake is an oval braided confection smothered with white icing and sugar sprinkles that salute the official colors of Mardi Gras: Green for faith, purple for justice, and gold for power. There's a trinket, usually a plastic baby, hidden inside each one.Tradition dictates that finding the baby in your cake symbolizes luck and prosperity, and the finder becomes the "king" or "queen" of the evening.
Not only will the one who finds the baby become royalty but take home a bottle of wine to keep the celebration going!

The event is $45 plus tax. Call (828) 575-9525 or go here: https://metro-wines.shoplightspeed.com/feb-21-fat-tuesday-food-and-wine-tasting.html
