Letter to the Editor – Wine Time? Shop Local!

Your Sunday, July 9 “Wine Time” article didn’t mention that Asheville has the absolute best wine clubs right here. There are at least three in town. Ours has all of the pros and none of the cons listed for the national clubs you mentioned. But your article missed one con we don’t have and two pros we do have. Con: all of these national clubs have expensive shipping fees. If they say there are no fees, trust me, it’s coming out of the quality of the wine. And the two pros: local clubs are a better value, and all of your club dollars stay in Asheville and support your community. So, consider the local clubs before sending your dollars out of town and NC.

Please join us on Thursday, July 27th from 4 to 6pm @MetroWines on Charlotte Street for a Materra Vineyards Wine Tasting "at the bar" and "on the house" hosted by Brian Noshay, Materra National Sales Representative.
 
The winemaker for Materra has a solid and storied wine history! Remember the movie "Bottle Shock" about The Judgment of Paris? Wiki summarizes the plot as follows: 

Sommelier and wine shop owner Steven Spurrier (Alan Rickman), a British expatriate living in Paris, is to increase his business. He concocts a plan to hold a blind taste-test intended to introduce Parisians to quality wines coming from elsewhere in the world. Spurrier travels to the not-yet-famous Napa Valley in search of contestants for his Judgment of Pairs taste test, where he meets vintner Jim Barrett (Bill Pullman) of Chateau Montelena. Barrett wants no part in it, believing it to be a set-up designed by the French to humiliate New World wine producers. Barrett's son, Bo (Chris Pine), secretly passes Spurrier a couple of bottles of the Chateau's Chardonnay for the competition. Pretty and nonconformist university graduate student Sam Fulton (Rachel Taylor) arrives at Chateau Montelena seeking an internship, and is promptly put to work in the vineyards. 

Chateau Montelena wins the blind tasting in Paris putting Napa on the world wine map. Flash forward, Bo Barrett and Heidi (the Sam Fulton character in the movie) marry. Chelsea Barrett is their daughter and the winemaker for Materra.
 
Materra Vineyards says: Winemaker Chelsea Barrett grew up in Calistoga and began working in vineyards and wineries from a young age. She attended UC Davis and graduated in 2010 with a degree in Viticulture and Enology. After college, Chelsea interned at Mayer am Pfarplaz (Austria), Two Hands (Australia), and Opus One (Napa Valley). She started as enologist at Joel Gott wines in 2012, where she was promoted to assistant winemaker a year later, then to winemaker in 2017. In 2017, she also joined Heidi as co-winemaker for Amuse Bouche and Au Sommet. Chelsea lives in Calistoga with her husband, two daughters, and a husky-german shepherd mix.

"Not long after we met, we quickly bonded over our love of wine. That was 31 years ago, and not much has changed. We like to enjoy wine in our everyday lives - with dinner, catching up with friends and family, and celebrating life’s most special events. After we married and Sean had spent a number of years in the wine industry, we noticed that there was a gap in the market. We were yearning for wines that were easy to enjoy, highlighted the amazing fruit of California, and didn’t break the bank—so we made them.

Initially, our brand was called Four Bears and we love sharing the story behind the name. We have four children - three sons and a daughter. Early on, we would convene at the kitchen table to taste various lots of wine, play around with potential blends and talk about what we liked and didn’t like. At one point, our 4-year-old likened this practice to the idea that we were like Goldilocks searching for just the right bottle.

We began by producing wines from premier appellations throughout California, sourced from vineyard sites strategically located near the cool, marine influences of the sun-filled California coast. With the help of a family friend and colleague, Will Bucklin, our initial production featured a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Central Coast Chardonnay, and Dry Creek Sauvignon Blanc.

Fast forward to today - our children have grown up, our business has evolved and our name has changed (we now go by Sean Minor Wines) but our dedication to producing quality wines at an approachable price has remained. Since we don’t own vineyards, we work diligently with sustainable, experienced farms throughout California and Oregon. We’ve developed strong relationships with some of the best growers in the industry so that we can contract the finest fruit.    This producer has been on our shelves and a best seller since we opened the door. Consistent Quality for the price. But lately, the "Consortium," Italian government lead panel that sets standards for wine has been, shall we say, infiltrated by competing (read: carpetbaggers) producers, outside wineries with BIG money. The newcomers want to change the style of Chianti Classico to be big and fruity. Cecione is one of the last family farmers. Hence, the Consortium has decided that the Cecione wine, although exactly the same quality, same high ratings (93) as previous years, cannot be called Chianti Classico, cannot be called Chianti at all! Witness the new label. But a bit of a backfire for the "Consortium." Without the Chianti Classico label, this wine, the same Chianti Classico wine, is less expensive! So there!

   The Cecione family is one of only 3 families that were working the land when Chianti Classico became a designation! The winery is still worked by the family and with a mere 4 hectares dedicated to viticulture. Wine made from grapes grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and herbicides in the vineyard. Certified organic.

    Truth be told, there is so much injustice in the world and, for most of it, we are helpless to fight back. But here, we have the power to show the "Consortium"  that they are probably political, pointless and passé. Buy Cecione! Exercise the bang of your buck, literally.

Tayria tells us that dreams provide profound, practical, useful and healing insights, designed by the psyche to communicate what we need to know now.  Learning the language of your dreams is a powerful tool not only for self-development and self-awareness, but for learning about the multi-layered world we live within. "I help individuals to learn this language and understand the value presented to them regularly in their nightly visions," says Tayria. 

 At this event, hosted by Metro Wines, Tayria will share a brief lecture offering insights into how to develop a relationship with your dreams, explaining why they are important, and giving a brief history of dreamwork. Bring your questions and bring your dreams, as the rest of the time will be spent interacting with those who attend. 

About Tayria: 

Tayria Ward has a Ph.D. in Depth Psychology. She lives in Asheville, NC, where she has a private practice offering dream analysis, psychological and spiritual mentorship to clients from all parts of the world. Tayria has worked intensively with her own dreams and those of others for nearly 50 years, and for nearly 30 years has been an avid student of indigenous ways of knowing and being. She conducts a monthly Global Community Dream Symposium wherein persons from all over the world come to share their dreams and listen to the collective dreaming mind. Tayria also teaches to a wide audience in regular interviews and lectures.

Low Alcohol Wines

Low Alcohol Wines!

   Low Alcohol wines are becoming scarce. What’s up? The temperature! Scorching heat waves and other climate-driven calamities have ruined harvests in Europe, North America, Australia and elsewhere.  Parts of Bordeaux are burning, Chile continues to battle devastating wine country fires and it seems California fights fire in vineyards on a daily basis.

   Red wines produced in Bordeaux, Tuscany, Piedmont and California had higher alcohol between 2010 and 2019 than registered in the 1990s. Climate change is the catalyst. Winemakers are trying to harness the alcohol through the timing of the harvest. The longer the grapes hang on the vines, the more intense the sugar and, hence, the alcohol level. But, winemakers explain, you cannot control the alcohol by simply picking grapes earlier. For example, if you harvest cabernet sauvignon grapes early to achieve a lower alcohol content, you risk producing a tart wine with heavier vegetal flavors such as green pepper.

   ABV or ALC, indicates alcohol by volume. The amount of alcohol in a container is shown as a percentage of the overall volume of the drink. And don’t think you can lower the ABV by aging the bottle! ABV is not affected by age as the sugars have already converted to alcohol. But the taste of the alcohol may become smoother and more understated giving the impression that the volume has been reduced. The percentage of alcohol in a wine bottle is is posted on the label, usually marked ALC.

   Wines with higher alcohol levels are rounder and richer in texture offering deeper and more concentrated flavors and often seem sweeter to the palate. Some wineries aim for this style as these higher alcohol wines tend to score higher points from the critics. That said, many wineries, particularly mass produced nationwide brands actually aim for this style! But if this is not the style you want, we can help!

   Alois Lageder Schiava is 11.5% alcohol. This bottle, due to its versatility and popularity has been a Thanksgiving tradition at Metro Wines. Schiava is a grape variety native to Trentino-Alto Adige, in northern Italy. Historically known for producing light-bodied and lighter-colored wines, the grape is light and tart with aromas of strawberry, raspberry, rose, lemon and smoke and boasts a spicy black pepper backbone that helps it pair nicely with heavier and spicier foods, even Thai Chili Basil!

   Also from Alois Lageder is an organic Pinot Grigio at 12% alcohol. Brilliant straw yellow with a green shimmer in the glass. The nose is pronounced and expressive aromas with flowery and somewhat spicy notes. And the palate presents rich flavors with a slight smokiness and a strong, fresh finish.

   An all around good choice for summer, low alcohol wines have a lower calorie count and tend to pair better with food!

Taste and Talk Series: Art and Wine 

Can art affect and inform winemakers and their philosophy about making their wines and how they want the public to perceive those wines? The answer is definitely yes!

This is an Asheville FIRST! Ciao Asheville and Metro Wines team up with Sarah Newman, art historian and Certified Sommelier with Volio Imports, to discuss the symbiosis between art and wine. This event will take place on Tuesday, June 13, 5:30pm, at Engaged Asheville Event Space, 41 N Merrimon Ave #107, Asheville, NC 28804.

Sarah just returned from a whirlwind trip to Italy, making her way from Piemonte to Sicily, visiting a number of winemakers, and will discuss their favorite artists and the various ways that art fuses with wine. 

This event will include a talk by Sarah while everyone tastes 6 Italian wines:

More about Sarah Newman:

After graduating from Duke in 2007 with an A.B. in Visual Art and Art History, Sarah Newman moved to New York to pursue her masters at Sotheby’s Institute of Art. It was a part-time job at a wine bar while in graduate school where Sarah was first bitten with the wine bug. Her New York restaurant experience includes such iconic places as P.J. Clarke’s, Oceana, Felidias and Artisanal Bistro. While in New York, Sarah also began pursuing wine education. She became a Certified Sommelier (Court of Master Sommeliers) in 2013 and passed with merit the advanced exam for Wine and Spirits Education trust. She is now pursuing the WSET Diploma, completion of which will make her eligible to become a candidate for Master of Wine (MS).  

Here in North Carolina, Sarah worked as a sommelier at the Angus Barn before discovering wine distribution. After working with over 85 restaurants in Durham, Sarah became the Regional Sales Director for Volio Imports and now represents her portfolio in over 10 states, including North Carolina. She is delighted to share her love of Italian wine in her home state.

Appearance: straw-yellow with citrine glints. Nose: intense and extremely elegant, giving off fruity aromas recalling especially apple, pear and peach. Palate: a creamy essence and a velvety flavor, revealing a structured body rich in volume and smoothness. Acidity is pleasant and perfectly balanced, for a freshness feeling and a delightful after-taste.

* Berlucchi, Franciacorta Brut Rosé 61

Region: Lombardy, Italy
Grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir
Appellation: Franciacorta

Wine Enthusiast – 92 Points. A Wine Spectator “Top 100”. “Bright and savory, this refreshing, polished sparkler boasts alluring aromas of juicy raspberry, wild cherry, baking spice and a whiff of bread crust. Fresh and very persistent on the palate, a finish with delicate hints of bitter almonds typical of Soave. It is ideal at any time of day. 

* Val delle Rose, Vermentino Litorale (2021)

Region: Tuscany, Italy
Grape: Vermentino
Color: Straw-yellow, with light gold reflections. Bouquet: Intense, fruit-forward aromas that suggest tropical fruits. Taste: Fresh, crisp with well-balanced acids, and an assertive finish. 

* Rivetto, Langhe Nebbiolo (2020)

Region: Piedmont, Italy
Grape: Nebbiolo
Appellation: Langhe

An extremely pleasing and drinkable wine and although it has a high alcohol grade this never overpowers its fruity character. Its red color has Bordeaux reflections and the slow trickle from the edge of the glass confirms its optimal concentration and good body. The palate is caressed by a smooth tannin content typical of the Nebbiolo grape and by a warm and enveloping flavor. 

* Tenuta Argentiera, Bolgheri Poggio Ai Ginepri Rosso (2021)

Region: Tuscany, Italy
Grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot
Appellation: Bolgheri

This Bolgheri DOC is composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot vinified separately and extracted by soft pressing. A nice wine with defined structure and pronounced concentration. The wine’s olfactory panorama is ample and profound while at once immediate and present. An intense structure characterizes this wine, but with a beautiful softness and a remarkably clean finish. Tenuta Argentiera stands in a magnificent patch of land in the Maremma that blends countryside and sea, suspended between woods and Mediterranean scrub.

Recently I took a road trip through the Mighty Mississippi Delta, my earth homeland. This road trip would prove to be two-fold. I wanted to go back and visit where my family was from since it had been 30 years but I also wanted to intentionally re-visit my food memories. I wanted to re-visit these memories because over the past 3 years I have nurtured a pop-up dining experience called The Clarksdale. This dining experience draws on my memories of the Mississippi Delta, gas station food and roadside diners. I wanted to see how these memories were holding up!
Wine Tour of Bordeaux Hosted by Jean Christain Rotagni of Contrast Tours and Joined by Andy Hale of The Asheville School of Wine at Metro Wines.
 
"This is a very urban tour, as Bordeaux is a quintessential European city, and one of the trendiest destinations in the world. Not only is Bordeaux utterly pleasant to live in, with its rather mild weather, its 12th to 18th century glorious architecture, which earned it to be on UNESCO's World Heritage List, but this is also a city with a rich past, and a vibrant present. We will stay in the very center of the town, and will take daily trips from that location to vineyards, cultural sites of importance, and villages of legends. Everyday will be a new feast, with gastronomy and wine aligned with the exceptional character of what we will visit. Cooking Class: Ricotta Gnocchi Class

About: Ciao Asheville Continues its Cooking Class Series with Ricotta Gnocchi

Ciao Asheville teams up again with Metro Wines and Asheville-based q.b. Cucina for a ricotta gnocchi cooking class. You’ll get hands-on instruction from Sarah Ubertaccio of q.b. Cucina. This event will take place on Sunday, April 16, 2023, from 12-3pm, at a private local residence in the Beaverdam area with mountain views (address to be provided with registration).  

You’ll work alongside Sarah as she demonstrates the skills to make this delicate gnocchi, plus a sauce perfect for a springtime pairing. What an ideal way to kick off spring! The class will conclude with enjoying the gnocchi and sauce you’ve made, a fresh salad, and wine.

Join us on Wednesday, March 8th from 5-6pm, @MetroWines for "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Wine But Were Afraid to Ask," presented by Andy Hale, Director of The Asheville School of Wine.
 
Andy says: "Be afraid no longer! Learn the basics of wine so that you will feel confident in all wine situations. Why do wines need to “breathe?” How long should I age my wines? Where do people come up with these crazy flavor descriptions? When I order wine in a restaurant, what do I do with the cork that the Sommelier presents to me? Learn all of these and more in this practical class with wine tastings."

But just know that the tour includes four nights in Arles on the edge of the Rhone and Camargue where Van Gogh painted his iconic "Cafe Terrassee at Night" almost in front of the hotel where you will stay!

Mardi Gras @MetroWines

Drop in for a French Fête Extraordinaire, "Mardi Gras @MetroWines," with Chef Sam Etheridge of AMBROZIA on Tuesday February 21st from 4 to 6pm at Metrowines on Charlotte Street. Wines from Johnson Brothers/Mutual will be paired to each dish.
 
"We invite you to cruise the food and wine stations, mingle, clink glasses and laissez les bons temps rouler!" says, Gina Trippi, co-owner of MetroWines. "Although rooted in religion, Mardi Gras has come to mean a time for everyone to let the good times roll and let tomorrow worry about tomorrow!"

Italy off the Beaten Path: Abruzzo

 Ciao Asheville, Metro Wines, and Saluda Sister Cities team up for an evening with Massimo Criscio and Dino Paganelli from the Palazzo Tour d’Eau in Carunchio, Abruzzo, Italy. This event will take place on Thursday, February 9th, 2023, at Engaged Asheville, 41 N Merrimon Ave #107, from 5:00-6:30pm.
 
Learn about the food, wine, culture, and travel opportunities in the region of Abruzzo. Massimo and Dino will also demonstrate a black truffle risotto typical of the region (and you'll get a taste!) and Metro Wines will be offering a glass of sparkling wine, plus a glass of red or white Abruzzese wine to celebrate the evening.
