Alice Donor Exhibit

APRIL

Opening Reception with Artist

Sunday, April 6, 4 to 6pm

Alice Doner Bio

Alice Doner, a former educator by profession, has been engaged in photography as an avocation for over 30 years.  She first studied photography with Goeff Winningham and Peter Brown at Rice University and later, as part of American Civilization studies, at the University of Texas at Austin.  Her work has been described as a "cross between landscape and still life."

After retiring to Asheville five years ago, she now has more time to devote to creating photo images, she says, "both from recently captured digital images and from the myriad of negatives, captured over the last several decades -- now being rediscovered and transformed by the almost unlimited possibilities afforded by the digital darkroom."  In addition to exploring photo imagery, she loves to garden and is active in the local branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women) and its charitable arm, the GEM Fund.  Alice lives in Weaverville with her husband Bob and their big shaggy golden retriever, Sophie.

Saturday, March 1st, 6pm

@MetroWines, 169 Charlotte Street in Asheville

And there will be music!

S.Karla is an Asheville based surrealist and gypsy jazz guitarist.

“I create my art in the spirit of learning.

The use of referencing personal/subconscious subject matter propels

my work and allows it to function as a sixth sense.

I am a dichotomy harnessing the raw and presenting it crisp and refined”

Joye Ardyn Durham Artist with a Camera

OPENING RECEPTION and WINE TASTING: SUNDAY, DECEMBER 1ST, 2PM TO 4PM

JOYE ARDYN DURHAM

The artist is on exhibition at The Gallery @MetroWines the entire month of December.

b2ap3_thumbnail_joye-and-wolf.jpg

Joye Ardyn Durham is an award winning photographer who has been involved in photography for over 45 years and is owner of the Gingko Tree Gallery in Black Mountain, North Carolina. Her images are used worldwide in an abundance of uses. She photographs nature, landscapes, and art as well as weddings, portraits, dogs, and family events. She has been published in WNC Magazine, Our State Magazine, Wall Street Journal, Views Magazine, The Laurel of Asheville, Black Mountain News and other publications in North Carolina, Kentucky and Florida. She has done work for Paramount Pictures, including the movie “28 Days” and the television show “Ed”, along with both Kentucky and North Carolina State Park systems.

Joye is an active member in Carolina Nature Photographers Association, Professional Photographers of American and National Association of Photoshop Professionals. Joye's images are used extensively in Lensbaby, LLC. publications and she is also involved in photography book reviews through Focal Press.

“Photography is my passion. It is that thing. You know, that thing you do that takes you away from every other thing. When I am out shooting, whether it be a sunrise, a newborn baby, or a family gathering, I lose all sense of past and future. I am there in the moment. Completely present.

When you are a photographer, you are also a weather person. You watch the weather conditions as if they were an old
friend coming to visit. You have to prepare and get ready. You make sure your equipment is ready. You get up at 3:30-4:00 in the morning. You travel, sometimes 3-4 hours to that special destination. All the while, getting excited about what you will see. And then it happens, the sun comes up, shining the light on the earth and waking up the day.

There it is, the Light. The Light that carries with it new opportunities to create. Without the Light there would be no creation. And creating is what fills my spirit.”

New Work from The West Coast

Nationally recognized and acclaimed artist, Larry Caveney,

brings us our new exhibition from his studio in San Diego.

Semi Public A Space for Contemporary Art

presents:

"New Work from The West Coast."

Join us to meet the artist and for a wine tasting. Follow us (LIKE us!!) on FB for the pour!

Opening Reception: Saturday, September 28th from 5 to 8pm @MetroWines.

This collection of work is based on principles of using familiar imagery (codified) and cracking it out to reveal other truths within an analogue approach to color.  After painting non-objective abstract, I now enjoy sharing those images that folks recognize and perhaps have some history with.  I have been making a painting a day for 14 months. I don’t share processes in my work, and I like it that way.  I share my work on facebook.  As soon as I finish painting I post it onto facebook for potential sales.  As a performance artist as well; I enjoy the immediacy of audience’s response; the Facebook connections satisfies me in this manner.

Seeing is Believing

Drawing Class with Gary Byrd, second session, challenged students last night to continue to LOOk, really LOOK at variously arranged still-life objects. Spatial relationships are becoming more clear and students are learning to trust their eyes after only 2 sessions. Next week, Gary continues to direct us to LOOK and synchronize our hands with our eyes. Seeing, really seeing, is the first step to learning to draw.

Good Bye to 160 Friends We Never Knew We Had Until They Were Gone

"More Face Than Head," an installation by Gray Byrd closed last night. We all said good bye. Much like many things in life, you don't know what you have until it's gone. These were, as Gary said, 160 friends we never knew we had, that is, until they were gone. The installation comes down, the frends go away, on Tuesday. There is still time to to take home a life long friend. $50. And if you miss your opportunity here, you can schedule a private showing at Gary's gallery at 305 Hillside in Asheville. Here's looking at you!

Line Up

Line up. Artist Gary Byrd took the "line" to a whole new level in the first session last night of the Drawing Class Series at Metro Wines. The first session was aptly titled "What is Drawing?" You might have thought you knew but quickly realized you had a lot to learn. Gary showed students original art by various artist who drew "lines" in ways you cannot imagine to give the viewer a vision of the artist's vision. So, this student's answer to the question is that the line, the simple line, is the pillar of a drawing, the visual version of the artist's thought. As such, the line consist of emotion, expression, structure, and purpose. In other words, the simple line is not so simple.

The first step in drawing a line is to be able to see the line in contast to its surroundings, the line on the paper, the line next to another line, the line that defines the side of the box next to the line that defines the top of the box, the line that forms the bottom of the box sitting on the line that is the table. To prove the point, students were asked to look at a stack of boxes on a table and draw them. Sound easy? Try it. You soon see the lines on your paper have little to do with the lines in the scene. It's not so easy to "see."

Next week we learn "Why draw?"

Caravaggio Wrap Up

A good time was had by ALL at the first event in the series "Art History Wine History" at Metro Wines featuring a reproduction painting by Asheville artist Nick Wade of Caravaggio's "Bacchus" (circa 1595, Rome) paired with wines from Italian vineyards in the Piedmont dating back to the 13th century. Metro Wines Curator Gary Byrd opened the conversation about Caravaggio and Nick Wade spoke of the "how," the technical methods of Italian Painters of the Baroque period, specifically Caravaggio, that Nick followed in producing this extraordinary reproduction. "Bacchus," the god of wine, will continue to be on auction through Sunday, June 9th. We do accept phone bids!   Please make an effort to see this reproduction. This is a rare opportunity to see a painting of this caliber in the tradition of the old master style. We planning the second event in this series "Art History Wine History." We encourage customers to offer suggestions of paintings to pair with wine.

Stay tuned for information on our next Semi Public exhibition - Tony Bradley - "The Black and White Work, 2001-2011." Opening Party on Saturday, June 15 from 6 to 8pm.

"More Face than Head" on exhibit until June 8th

The work currently on view represents a selection of oil/wax on canvas from 2000 -2008. The work is content driven an represents a small portion of work done over 8 years, most of the work from that period is now in private collections. The work is operating as abstraction and within the layers a subtle figurative element begins to appear. Therein lies the content. My work is rooted in the observation of man, loosely put: I see, I think, I worry, I paint.
